OUTBACK GRIP From page 1 OUTBACK LANDS So, we are witnessing significant and long-term shifts in the market place. The rise of the SUVs has been occurring for some time. Indeed, the first signs were the release of the small or compact SUVs back in the late 1990s. But it has only been in the last couple of years that the step-change has occurred. SUVs are nowadays much safer, easier to drive, more economical and cheaper to run, with lower entry prices thanks to two wheel drive models, and more and more OEMs are building cars for the volume SUV segments. It’s foreseeable that SUVs will account for 35 per cent of total industry sales within three years. The growth has come in the small, medium and large SUV segments, and indeed the upper large category has declined from its heyday in the late 1990s. The recent impetus has been in the small SUV category where vehicles like the Subaru XV compete. We expect to have an all-time record XV month in March. But it is the large SUV segment where Subaru has the largest oppor tunity. It is the biggest category still - by 1300 units year-to-date - and it is a segment where we haven’t been a big player. That is because diesel engined vehicles with automatic transmission dominate this segment. At present, the category is 45 per cent petrol and 55 per cent diesel. Of the diesel vehicles sold in this large SUV category, 94 per cent have automatic transmission and just six per cent have manual transmissions. Hence, we have not been able to play in approximately 50 per cent of the largest SUV market up until now. This has been a limiting factor for us to increase Outback sales. Last year we passed 25,000 SUV sales for the first time, and while XV and Forester have been major contributors, the Outback has been limited by the lack of a diesel auto. With this new variant we expect to be able to grow Outback sales from their current level of 220 units per month, to around 350 per month, or around 4200 per year. We have sold 82,000 Outbacks since its launch in 1996. In short, we are excited by what the new Subaru Outback 2.0D CVT offers, and we are sure our retail network is as well.
