DEALERSHIPS GRIP SUBARU ARRIVES IN BATEMANS BAY Check out the Subaru website subaru.com.au THE New South Wales coastal town of Batemans Bay now has a Subaru retail outlet - South Coast Subaru. Not only is the marque now in town, its DP, Allan Rutherford, has built a new home for it, with an impressive new showroom and facility on one of the town’s major high-traffic corners. GRIP caught up with Allan to find out more about the South Coast Subaru business, and a little about the man himself. GRIP: Can you tell us about the history of the dealership? choice enjoyed by the rest of the state. GRIP: How long was the process from saying “let’s do it” to opening the doors? AR: Once the franchise agreement was in place, plans could be made for the renovation of the western end of the dealership to accommodate the Subaru brand. The plans were signed off on February 24, 2012 and the showroom was ready for official opening on June 16, 2012. All up, from the time of franchise approval to finished product was six months. The works involved the gutting of 100m2 of the old building and replacing the floor, windows, all electrical and lighting to accommodate a two-car showroom. All works were internal, except for the addition of signage to the fascia. GRIP: What do you consider to be the absolutely essential, non- negotiable elements of the design? AR: The idea was to integrate the Subaru brand into the current site, providing an identifiable Subaru presence without changing the character of the existing business. Customers needed to see that we were expanding our offering, not just changing it. GRIP: What do you think of the end result? AR: I am extremely happy with the outcome. The renovation has renewed the look of the whole dealership and provided a fresh look, particularly at night. GRIP: Can you tell us what facilities you now have for Subaru? AR: We have a two-car showroom dedicated to the AR: The dealership commenced in 1989 as a service station/used car yard under the name Batemans Bay Motors. In 1994, the new vehicle Ford franchise was added to the business and the trading name changed to South Coast Ford. The business continued like this until 2012 when the Subaru franchise was added, and an additional trading name of South Coast Subaru. GRIP: When did you get involved? AR: In March 2008 I purchased the business and relocated my family from Orange to Batemans Bay. Since that time, we have worked hard to grow the business through our focus on customer service. We have made a huge effort to increase the standards and professionalism of the business through processes and staff training. We now have in place the best team of sales and service people in Batemans Bay. This is reflected in our consistent high ratings from customer surveys. It was always part of our plan to bring other brands to town to give local people the INSIDE GRIP HOME PAGE STI BRZ PBMS BRZ PARTS & ACCESSORIES AFTERSALES ALLIANCES DEALERSHIPS MARKETING TRENDS DEALER STATS SPORT
