Grip : GRIP July 2012
SPORT GRIP SUBARU AT HOME AT THE TOUR DE FRANCE ON debut at the Tour de France, Australia’s Orica GreenEDGE team has been making a name for itself, and keeping the Subaru support cars busy as it has made its mammoth three-week journey. The team created plenty of interest with the masses of fans who line the roads and who devour Tour de France on the web or on TV, par ticularly over the first two weeks when Matt Goss was in contention for the green sprinter’s jersey. Matt came close to taking a number of stages - he was a regular on the sprinter’s podium - and was a major contender for the green jersey until being disqualified during a finish line tussle. Goss was docked 30 points for moving off his line in a sprint with green jersey favourite, Peter Sagan, in Annonay Davezieux on stage 12. The decision, coupled with the Tasmanian’s struggle the following day, virtually ended his hopes in the category. Bad luck for Matt, but he had clearly established himself as one of the world’s premier sprinters and has been a great asset for the team. Cycling critics have been impressed with Orica GreenEDGE’s debut season, and the team has been a popular focus on the Tour. The Subaru support vehicles have also been a standout in the crowds, looking right at home wherever they go as the world watches on.
