TOUR DE FRANCE GRIP A BIRTHDAY TO REMEMBER ... IN FRANCE WHEN it comes to 60th birthday presents, it rarely gets better than this. Glenis Nicholas, now a Queenslander, but a woman who has lived in many towns across Eastern Australia, and even the world, was given a new Subaru XV. Now while that sounds good, wait, there’s more! On visiting Zupps Subaru on the Gold Coast to collect her new dark grey XV, Glenis found out that she qualified to go into the draw for the “Subaru Real Tour Experience in France” competition. “The most bizarre thing is that I always knew I was going to win it,” Glenis said. Yes, she was right, she did. And now, along with husband of 42 years, Mark, she has headed off for a 13-day trip of a lifetime to follow all the action at the Tour de France. “It’s very exciting. I can’t believe it. I can’t imagine what it is like to win millions.” While the mother of three and grandmother of five is not a cycling fan or a sports nut, her sense of excitement and anticipation before departing was palpable. Glenis’ amazing experience included: Return flights to Paris (economy) for two 13 nights accommodation, including breakfast All transfers (luxury coach and/or TGV fast train) Welcome cocktail briefing event hosted by SBS’ Scott Sunderland Three group dinners Four key tourism activities Tour de France Relais Etape hospitality event Final day ASO hospitality L’Espace Triomphe alongside the Champs-Elysées Paris farewell function/party with entertainment Cycling Australia Tours travel pack (includes polo shir t) $5000 ANZ gift card “All the kids think I should give the prize to them, but I’ve declined,” Glenis said. “I’ve watched the daily half- hour wrap of the Tour on SBS for a number of years, and I do find the logistics of the event fascinating and I’m amazed at the strength of willpower of the riders.” Despite the excitement and obvious at traction of the trip, one gets a sense that there are some things she’ll miss when away, and it’s not just the kids and the grandchildren. “I just absolutely love my new XV. I’m like a teenage boy (sic). I just go out to the garage and look at it and think of where I can take it.” Glenis, it will still be in the garage when you get back and you can enjoy it then. It’s going to be hard to beat this present for her 70th birthday.
