WHAT’S IN THE PRESS GRIP Send your customer feedback letters to Subaru EyESIGHTTM IMpRESSES AcROSS THE GLOBE SUBARU’S EyeSightTM was recently revealed in the United States, while at home, more Australian journalists are getting to experience the technology every week. EyeSight is proving to be valuable technology, both in terms of it adding value to Subaru’s safety story and in creating publicity that the brand is an innovator. Leading international technology website, CNET.com, reviewed the new EyeSight system and its reviewer, Wayne Cunningham, came away impressed. “Over the last decade, Subaru has been a follower, not a leader, in automotive technology. But in one swoop the company is giving its cars a set of advanced driver assistance features competitive with those from Mercedes-Benz and Audi. “Subaru’s new EyeSight system uses two cameras to monitor what is out in front of the car. These cameras use stereo processing to determine the distance of other cars or objects ahead. They also can recognise lane lines. “These sensors enable a whole raft of driver assistance features. Collision prevention and mitigation can hit the brakes if the cameras detect an imminent collision with a pedestrian, car, or object. Subaru says that at speeds under 19 mph, the system can brake the car quickly enough so as to avoid a collision. At greater speeds the automatic braking will reduce the impact. “When leaving a parking spot, the system can deactivate the throttle if there is an object in the way. Subaru says this feature is useful if a driver accidentally puts the car into Drive instead of Reverse. “As the system can detect lane lines, it will sound a warning if the car begins to make a lane change without the turn signal being activated. This lane departure warning is useful for drowsy drivers who may let the car drift into oncoming traffic. “The cameras can also look far enough ahead to enable adaptive cruise control. Here, the driver can set a cruise control speed, and the car will automatically brake and match the speed of a slower car in the lane ahead. EyeSight can bring the car to a complete stop if the car ahead has stopped. “Another benefit for inat tentive drivers is a feature that works in stop- and-go traffic. When the car ahead begins to move, the system sounds an alert if the Subaru’s driver does not get moving.” Many Subaru buyers are tech-savvy and will be familiar with CNET.com, so it is useful to be able to point potential buyers to the review. Respected and long-serving Western Australia motoring writer, Neil Dowling, recently had a Liberty 3.6R Premium as a test vehicle to evaluate. He liked the car, particularly EyeSight. “Humans make mistakes - otherwise, most of you wouldn’t be here - and it’s ironic that only humans make devices that can prevent us from making mistakes. “Subaru’s see -all, tell-all driver assistant package - c alled EyeSight - ranks alongside Volvo’s City Safety as a vital tool to reduce road fatalities and even vehicle damage. “But unlike most safety technology, its debut isn’t just for the wealthy motorist. Subaru includes EyeSight in two models - Liber ty 3.6R Premium sedan and Outback 3.6R Premium wagon - as standard equipment. “Considering EyeSight is included in the price of the six-cylinder premium Liberty and Outback versions, it represents very good value for money. There’s no price sufficient for replacing or restoring life. “Aside from this system, the Liberty sedan tested is a sleeper. It’s loaded with features, is quick, comfortable and blessed with fine handling while exuding quality. It’s not short of rivals - VW Passat 4Motion ($57,990) being the closest, but other Euros are all in there - but EyeSight gives it the edge.” Neil Dowling’s overall verdict? “EyeSight is the icing on a quality car that should be bought with long-term ownership in mind.” Tim Pomroy has done a video review of EyeSight. It is a good and independent assessment of the technology. In it, Pomroy noted: “Driving the car today the EyeSight system was smooth and seamless. The system does not take Subaru EyeSight away driver control. With EyeSight the driver is always in control. “The Subaru name has been synonymous with safety for years and they want that to continue into the future.
