WHO’S WHO GRIP lONG SERVicE hAS iTS OWN REWARDS Send your customer feedback letters to Subaru EXCELLENCE is always sought after. Long service is admired. When someone combines the two, they deserve special recognition. So it is with Miguel Ocariz, who has just completed 36 years with Jupiter Motors in Wagga Wagga, and along the way he has earned himself a fine reputation as technician, family man and friend. Recently, Subaru Australia travelled to the country New South Wales city to present Miguel with a Long Service Award. Miguel migrated from Chile to Australia in 1974, aged just 24, with wife Carmen and four-year-old daughter Paula. Their second daughter, Angela, was born a few years later. Miguel was first employed at a Leonard’s Exhausts as a fitter and then went to Jason Nissan as a mechanic. But it was in October 1975 that he started his long and loyal employment with Jupiter Motors, then owned by Peter and Judy Walsh, and his involvement with Subaru. “Miguel quickly established himself as a very competent, self-taught, mechanic, specialising in electrical diagnosis, having pursued a love of anything mechanical in his home country,” Scott Ohem recalled. “Early on his passion was motorcycles and he became a very competent road racer, taking out several titles. “However, rumour has it that his desire for thrills on, and in, any fast machine quickly made him the focus of the local constabulary.” Speaking very little English, Miguel worked his days in the back shed of Jupiter Motors in Edward Street, alongside many mechanics who came through the door. Two of the apprentices that were privileged to have Miguel’s guidance were Scott Oehm (who star ted at Jupiter’s in 1976 and is the current Dealer Principal) and Mark Drum (now the Fixed Operations Manager who started at Jupiter’s in 1995). “According to the duo, a lot of funny times were had in the old shed until Jupiter Motors moved to the current site,” Ohem said. “Miguel has made his life from working on, and fixing, motor vehicles that most mechanics in Wagga wouldn’t touch. He quickly established himself as a mechanic of note, having people request he work on their vehicles, and his experience in motor vehicles, in particular Subaru, is held in very high regard not only by Jupiter Motors, but also the people of Wagga and Subaru Australia.” Jupiter Motors was sold in 1999 to its current owners and Miguel stayed loyal to the business and its franchises. “Miguel’s dedication to Carmen, his children and grand children, Subaru Australia, Jupiter Motors and the apprentices that have learnt the trade from him, make him a very special person,” Ohem said. “Starting life in a foreign country, with no formal trade qualifications, with a language barrier, but to succeed is testament to the character of the man who deserves all the accolades of today.” The day after receiving his Long Service Award, Miguel went to Bathurst for a ride with Subaru rally ace, Dean Herridge, around the legendary road track (pictured). Dean was also touched by Miguel’s humility, as they shared a need for speed. “It was an absolute pleasure to meet and take Miguel for hot laps around Bathurst,” Dean said. “It’s people like Miguel that make Subaru such a strong brand and one that we are all proud to be associated with. “Miguel’s life story is an amazing and inspirational one. With his love of speed, I think that if we’d provided him the oppor tunity he would have given any lap time that I could do here a serious shot!” INSIDE GRIP HOME PAGE AFTERSALES PARTS & ACCESSORIES WHO’S WHO MARKETING AMBASSADOR TOURER CONCEPT BRZ CONCEPT STI BRAND COMPARISON DEALER RANKINGS SPORT
