DEALERSHIP GRIP SUBARU THRIVES IN THE HIgH COUNTRY Subaru has had a high profile in Perisher Valley this snow season, with the brand sponsoring the resor t and being involved in a large number of promotional activities. The skiers and snowboarders who drive through Cooma on their way to the mountains have noticed a revamped and rejuvenated Subaru presence in the sub-alpine town, with the arrival of Adam D’Amato at High Country Subaru. Adam only took over the dealership on February 1 this year, but already he has made a real impact in the town, and with the brand. In fact, the Adam only moved to Cooma a week before he star ted the business, straight from Wollongong where he had spent the past six years managing a dealership. Back in the 1980s, the Subaru was known as the “Jindabyne Holden” in the New South Wales ski resorts, but according to Adam, the brand definitely has an identity all of its own these days. “You think that every second car that passes through Cooma these days is a Subaru, it’s amazing,” Adam said. “You only have to look at the Perisher car park to see how Subaru is seen in the mountains, they are everywhere.” While the tourism industry is obviously a key part of the economy for the region, Adam sees a big future outside of skiing and trout fishing for the town and its surrounds. “With renewable energy growing, and the Snowy Mountains being on the forefront of this industry with Snowy hydro and wind farms, we see Cooma growing and developing. “There have been plans for a university campus to begin in the area which will not only create jobs, but will bring a lot of people to the area, which will help all local businesses.” Adam has brought great energy to a town that boasts huge market penetration for Subaru, involving themselves in a range of local activities, as well as renovating the dealership. “Customers have been praising us for our extended hours, giving them more convenience,” Adam said. “They have been thrilled to see us in the local papers suppor ting local fundraisers and sporting teams, which has increased our profile and sense of involvement. “We donate a percentage of every vehicle sold to the local St Vincent de Paul Foundation and suppor t and sponsor local events and sporting teams. “The local owners have embraced the changes we have made, especially in the service department, where we have made it more comfortable for them to wait for their Subaru to be serviced.” Sales are also booming. “We are reaching targets consistently and hope to continue to do so in the future. July was fantastic as we reached 238 per cent of our target. “One of our philosophies is to buy everything local. We want to suppor t businesses in the area and hope they will support us in return. The service department is a key focus for growing the business. “We have plans to expand and grow our service centre and of course retain our number one position in market share in the world for Subaru.” The changes implemented by Adam, including trading on Saturday for sales and service, have had an immediate impact. “We have actually grown by 10 staff since we took over,” Adam said. “People are talking about High Country Subaru as being the place to work in the region. “Change can be as good as a holiday. Our staff has been excited about the way the business has changed for the better – both for customers and of course themselves. “This is Subaru country. We see Subaru continuing to be a success and being the number one car dealer in the region.” The team at High Country Subaru (L-R): Ben Rolfe (Sales Executive), Jason kilpatrick (Sales Executive), and Adam D’Amato (Dealer Principal).
